Buffett had an innovative idea early in his career: to use the float he received from his insurance firms to invest elsewhere. He chose stocks that would be held long-term.

Buffett has been adamant about trust investments, and has resisted a diversified stock portfolio. He prefers to invest in trusted investments that are over-weighted to get the best return. Buffett’s investing skills became so famous that Berkshire Hathaway has made its annual shareholder meetings a gathering place for value-investing proponents. They also attract intense media scrutiny.

Special Considerations

From 1965 to 2021 the compounded annual gains of Berkshire Hathaway was barely twice that of S&P 500. Berkshire Hathaway’s stock had an annualized gain of 20.1% during that time, while the S&P 500 gained 10.5%.

Berkshire has always been passionate about succession. The question is how Buffett’s replacement will continue outperforming the market. This question becomes more pressing when Buffett turns 90 in 2021.

Buffett stated in 2010 that Berkshire Hathaway would succeed him by a team consisting of one CEO and two-to four investment managers.

In 2011, Ted Weschler, and Todd Combs were announced as hedge fund managers. Ajit Jain was made the head of all insurance operations while Greg Abel took over management of all other operations (non-insurance). Both men looked like they would be a good choice to become Buffett’s heir apparent.

Buffet has not made any plans for retirement. It is still encouraging that the question of succession was answered given the advanced age of the Oracle of Omaha.
